Delaware, Maryland Beaches Get High Water Marks
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) ―
The beaches in Delaware and Ocean City, Md., are getting high marks for water quality.
The National Resources Defense Council has rated the beaches in Maryland and Delaware as some of the nation's cleanest in its annual water quality report.
The NRDC uses Environmental Protection Agency data to prepare the report and rank states and beaches.
Delaware took the top spot, just ahead of New Hampshire and Virginia, with only 1 percent of samples across 24 beaches exceeding bacteria limits. Maryland was ranked eighth, with too much bacteria in 2 percent of samples.
Across the country, 7 percent of samples contained waste-related human or animal bacteria that exceeded health standards. Many of the problems are tied to stormwater runoff and overflowing sewers and septic systems.
