Delaware Valley Celebrates Labor Day
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Workers and elected officials alike are celebrating the Labor Day holiday throughout the tri-state region Monday.
The 22nd Annual Tri-State Labor Day Parade kicked off at the sheet metal workers Local 19 Union Hall in South Philadelphia at 9 a.m.
Parade participants were set to march from Washington Avenue and Columbus Boulevard to Penn's Landing, where a family celebration would kick off from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Many showed their disapproval about the current financial trouble facing the city when Mayor Michael Nutter took the stage Monday morning. A chorus of boos greeted the Mayor as he began and ended his remarks.
The city is seeking the approval from Harrisburg to raise the city sales tax and delay pension contributions in order to bridge a massive budget gap. Without the measure, the city will have to implement a "Plan C" budget that would result in thousands of layoffs.
Mayor Nutter said the rests in the hands of lawmakers in Harrisburg.

Vice President Joe Biden is touring the state off Pennsylvania in honor of Labor Day. following a morning celebration in Pittsburgh, Biden and U.S. Senator Arlen Specter are headed to Chester to have lunch with firefighters on the 300 block o East 14th Street.
From 11am to 3pm, the AFL-CI Philadelphia council were staging a family celebration featuring food, refreshments, entertainment, and kids activities.

The Lehigh Valley is hosting an all-day picnic to celebrate the workers' holiday. Over 40 unions are expected to be joined by local politicians and political candidates during the picnic celebration from noon until 6 p.m.

The AFL-CIO hosted a parade in Wilmington, Delaware featuring bands from local high schools beginning at 10 a.m. A noon rally will be held at Tubman-Garret Park following the celebration.

All federal and state agencies and courts are closed for the Labor Day holiday. There will be no postal service and trash/recycling collections will be delayed for one day throughout Philadelphia.
Most banks are closed for the day along with many city services, including the Free Library, recreation centers, Department of Licenses and Inspections, Philadelphia Parking Authority and the Philadelphia Gas Works customer centers.
There are still a few things open, including the Philadelphia Zoo, Museum of Art and the Please Touch Museum.
SEPTA will be operating on a Sunday schedule throughout the day and PATCO will have holiday service.
