Mummers Have Eyes On The Sky

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ―

Weather forecasts indicate wind and some rain is possible New Year's Day in the Philadelphia area, and that could threaten the Mummers' strut up Broad Street.

Still, most of the participants are hard at work on final preparations for Tuesday's annual parade.

The 107-year-old tradition is often described as Philadelphia's version of Mardi Gras. It features dozens of string bands, floats, and plenty of feathered and sequined costumes.

SEPTA is adding transit service for Monday night's fireworks and Tuesday's Mummers Parade.

Spokesman Jim Whitaker says service will be primarily on a regular weekday schedule except for the regional rails, which will operate later into the evening to help people going to the fireworks.

The parade will be held Saturday if the weather doesn't cooperate on New Year's Day.
