Health: Muscles vs. Brain For Women
by Stephanie Stahl
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
In health, what kind of men are women attracted to
brainy or brawny? New research says it is a split decision and
Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has more details.
Brains win out in the long term, according to the new research. But it says women tend to go for muscular men for quick flings.
New research from the University of California says men with hard, chiseled bodies have more quick flings.
But for long term relationships, women preferred the more trustworthy, brainy type.
"It's saying muscular men are more likely to have one night stands and scrawnier men are more likely to be looked at as long term partners, I believe it," Philadelphia sex therapist Alex Robboy said.
Robboy says hunky men are often thought of as being too self involved.
"They don't have as much time to commit to a long term relationship because they need to be at the gym," Robboy said.
At the Aquatic & Fitness Center in Bala Cynwyd, there were plenty of opinions.
"Of course looking good for the opposite sex definitely helps," gym-goer Carlos said.
Muscles are traditionally associated with masculine, virile men.
The new study says the beef-cake type was also twice as likely to hook up with someone else's sweetheart.
"We call them meatheads and they're just all muscle and no brain
so good for a one night stand but not for marriage material," Heather Perry said.
Some call them scrawny, instead of brawny but that's the type women turn to for the long term.
"If you want to have something that's everlasting and true energy between two people then you're going to want something to invest in and physical qualities aren't necessarily something that's number one on the priority list," Beth Bayne said.
Therapists like Alex said men who aren't as physically superior may be more likely to work harder in a relationship to keep their mate which is another reason women may stay with the scrawnier man in the long run.
