Health: Virtual Biking

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― How would you like to work out in the alps or along the California coast and not ever leave Philadelphia? Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl introduces you to the newest virtual fitness routine.

From a snowy trail to Ancient ruins. Pick a place and hop on for a bike ride like nothing you've ever seen.

"You can forget about your stressful problems and just really focus on the surroundings and the nature," said Julie Marchenko, a virtual biker.

It's called the Expresso bike. It's the newest interactive, virtual stationary bike.

"It's entertaining. It keeps me engaged," said Cindy Wesley, a virtual biker.

Wesley and her husband Mike are busy parents of twin boys who want a quick, but fun workout. They like the variety of visuals and the ability to race each other.

"You can really interact with the different bikers. It helps you work a little harder. It's not monotonous. It keeps things interesting," said Mike.

Trainers say biking is a great, no impact cardiovascular workout that can burn up to 380 calories an hour.

"These bikes are going to put you to the test," said Jason Bridgeman, a trainer at The Sporting Club at the Bellevue.

There are different levels for a super hard work out, down to an easy cruise through a tree lined park at sunset, Bridgeman said

"Time flies by," said Matt Taylor, a virtual biker who usually rides outside and is now moving in.

Here there are no worries about weather, traffic, and neighborhood dangers. Just choices.

"I've tried about five different courses today. A little town, riding pass candy chops, thru camp grounds," said Matt.

And all under one, air conditioned roof in several gyms around the area.

The Expresso Bikes can be found at the following gyms:

The Sporting Club at The Bellevue, in Philadelphia, PA
Devon Fitness Club, in Berwyn, PA
Sweat Fitness, Queen Village & Walnut Street locations in Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia YMCA's
