Health: Burrito Diet

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Finding a diet you can stick with is the best technique to lose weight according to experts. Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has the details on one surprisingly successful plan.

Eating burritos on a diet. Yes, burritos every which way. It's how Matt Lisk lost 80 pounds.

Lisk once topped the scale at 300 pounds. It was a life long struggle, starting out as a chunky kid. And in college he didn't gain the traditional freshman 15, instead he gained 50 pounds.

Matt says he gained and lost too many pounds to count. He finally invented his own diet with burritos, everything wrapped in a tortilla. Three burritos a day with two snacks.

Matt stuck to about 1,500 calories a day. Breakfast, usually eggs, sometimes with veggies. For Matt it has to be quick and easy. He uses things like frozen vegetables, and ready-to-cook chicken.

"It's a protein source, a fiber source, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables, and the portion size is really controlled by the tortilla itself," said Matt.

And it's not just Mexican. Matt has Italian, Thai, even basic all American roast beef burritos.

"It's a reasonable size. It's got the right portions of food, and its got the right components of food. This will fill you up." said Matt.

Andrea Spivack, a Dietitian at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, says with the right kind of ingredients it can be a sensible plan.

"A burrito prepared the right way has some very redeeming qualities. It can encompass some of the nutrition concepts of balance, variety and moderation," said Spivack.

"It's just whatever you can fit in there, in that wrap, that's what you eat for that meal," said Matt.

Along with his Burrito Diet, that was made into a book, Matt added daily exercise to boost the weight loss.
