Health: BodyTite Liposuction

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A new way to get rid of unwanted fat and tighten skin at the same time is being tested here in the Philadelphia area. Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has details on this new breakthrough.

It's the kind of outfit, tight pants and a short top, Denise Burns says she would have never worn, but now she's proud to show off her new slimmed down midsection, even though she's still a little swollen and bruised.

"I think it looks fabulous," said Denise. She's a 52-year-old mother of five from Beverly, New Jersey who says she hated rolls of fat on her back that spilled over her pants, nick-named muffin tops.

"No matter how much weight I lost I still had the rolls in the back," said Denise. They're gone now after a new liposuction procedure called BodyTite. It's supposed to get rid of fat and tightens skin at the same time.

"It really is everything that everybody wanted wrapped into one thing," said Dr. Steven Davis, a Cherry Hill Plastic Surgeon. He says as the fat is removed, radiofrequency heat causes the tissue to shrink.

"It's really like electric energy just like a microwave, this is radio frequency waves," said Dr. Davis.

Nilda Johnson has come to get BodyTite on her inner thighs.

"I think it's gonna give me more self confidence to do what I want to do, go to the gym and wear skirts," said Nilda.

Dr. Davis says it's easier and quicker than traditional lipo, and is done in the office, with mild sedation and a local anesthetic.

For Denise, she's thrilled to be getting rid of her girdle like undergarments she used to wear everyday. No longer being able to grab a handful of fat, her former muffin tops, now flat like pancakes.

There are other kinds of heat assisted lipo's, but this one is supposed to be faster with better skin tightening. Dr. Davis is conducting part of the clinical trial on BodyTite, so it's technically still experimental. But FDA approval is expected soon. It costs between $2,000 and $6,000.
