Health: Alzheimer's Breakthrough
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl reports a major breakthough in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease was announced at a Chicago conference.
Lipitor and other statins like Zocor help control cholesterol and heart disease. A new study from the University of Michigan says they can also stop Alzheimer's before it starts. It's an exciting new discovery for millions like Serge Kogan who take statins.
"I think it's great that you take medicine for one thing and it can also help other parts, other Illnesses," said Serge.
The new study found taking statins over a five to seven year period reduced the risk for dementia by half. It appears statins can lower high insulin levels in the brain that lead to Alzheimer's.
"Lowering vascular risk factors can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and general dementia," said Dr. Mary Haan, Study Researcher.
It's not just statins for cholesterol, another study found blood pressure drugs called Angiotensin Receptor Blockers or ARB's, like Cozaar, can also lower the risk for dementia. Even for people already suffering with early symptoms the progression is slowed.
Researchers say it's too soon to prescribe statins and ARB's to help prevent Alzheimer's but, "Reducing risk factors whether it's high blood pressure or high cholesterol is very helpful," said Dr. Merle Myerson, a Cardiologist.
Regular exercise, eating a low fat diet and staying mentally active, with things like crossword puzzles, can help reduce risk factors and protect the brain.
Another study out today shows a milder type of mental decline that often precedes Alzheimer's disease is alarmingly more common than has been believed, especially among men.
Researchers estimate nearly a million older Americans slide from normal memory into mild impairment each year, based on a Mayo Clinic study of Minnesota residents.
