Health Wrap: Mammograms, Lung Cancer & Gray Hair

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Mammograms:

Mammograms are supposed to find breast cancer, but a new study says for some women the annual screenings can cause the cancer. Mammograms are the best way to find early stage breast cancer, but this research, presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, says for younger women with a family history the low dose radiation could increase their risk. Researchers say those women should consider alternative screening methods, like ultrasound and MRI's.

Lung Cancer:

A lung cancer breakthrough from the Wistar Institute here in Philadelphia. For people in high risk groups researchers have found signs of early stage lung cancer with a special blood test. There currently isn't a standard screening for this cancer, so it's usually diagnosed in more advanced stages. If this research pans out it could be a quick and simple way to detect lung cancer, when it can be most successfully treated.

Gray Hair & Genetic Link :

Stress might make your hair fall out, but it doesn't cause it to turn gray. New research of twin sisters says graying is genetic, not environmental. The twins hair turned gray at the same time, even if one had a hectic lifestyle and the other was more peaceful. The same study also looked at receding hair-lines and found that was genetic too, but thinning hair was linked to environmental and lifestyle issues. Gray hair in men and women is mostly linked to aging, but this new research says there could also be a connection with exposure to certain types of chemicals in the environment.
