Health: Finding Low-Cost & Free Health Care

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Your Money Team is helping you get low cost and sometimes even free health care for the growing number of people with no insurance. Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has the story on how it can work for you.

Six-year-old Alexa King is being treated for strep throat even though her parents don't have medical insurance.

"It's good," said Lori King, Alexa's mother. "I thank God for this place."

The medical facility is called The Clinic in Phoenixville.

It's a place where people with no insurance can get medical care.

"I never thought it was going to happen," said Lori about losing her family's medical insurance. "It's scary."

Lori's husband Charles was laid off in October.

Now the King family is living on unemployment and unable to afford insurance.

For the 46 million Americans, like the King family, seeing a doctor can be difficult and expensive.

"There's nowhere else to go," said Lori. "I mean if you were to go to the hospital you'd have to pay a lot of money."

Dr. Lorna Stuart understands.

"The people are worried," said Dr. Stuart who has seen people unable to pay for office visits and antibiotics.

Dr. Stuart had been in private practice for 22 years.

She and Reverend Marie Swayze decided to open the clinic in Chester County to help the growing number of people with no insurance.

"It's my own sense of satisfaction at helping people," said Dr. Stuart. "But to see people's faces that walk into the clinic stressed and pained in so many ways and walk out smiling is a real gift for me to be able to do that."

The Clinic runs on private donations and a few grants. Patients pay what they can.

"It's extremely helpful, gives you a good feeling," said Charles.

There are other similar facilities where patients can receive free or low-cost medical care.

The links to those places are below along with a brand new feature about health savings.

It's a comprehensive list that will help you save money and stay healthy.
