The Complete Beck Diet for Life
The most popular New Years resolution is to lose weight. Now a new kind of diet solution is just being published and it could help you meet your New Year's goal.
"I just want to show off my low rise pants," said Barbara Nelson.
It's been her dream. Barbara Nelson is now able to wear hot outfits.
"I love to get dressed, where it used to be a nightmare just to find something I didn't look fat in, which was completely impossible, because when you're fat, you're fat," said Nelson.
A year ago, Barbara, who lives in South Jersey weighed 210 pounds.
"I can't even believe it's the same person," she said looking at a picture of her "old" self.
Having struggled with gaining and losing weight for decades, Barbara finally found the secret to weight loss success, dropping 75 pounds in 10 months.
"It was like a lightening bold hit me, it was like 'oh my gosh, I've been doing it wrong all these years.' It's not about food, it's about changing the way you think," she said.
Barbara's salvation was Dr. Judith Beck in Bala Cynwyd and her book, Complete Beck Diet for Life Program. The new book is just hitting store shelves.
"What you really need to do to follow a plan is to change your thinking," said Dr. Beck.
Unlike most diets that focus on behavior, this one targets thoughts. The Beck Diet is based on cognitive therapy, in addition to calorie counting, recipes and eating strategies.
"What people say is it's such a relief to finally learn how to diet because then dieting gets easier," said Dr. Beck.
She has a few tricks, like the distraction box filled with things to do, games, a list of friends to call, and photo albums to be filled.
"The goal is to have a quick and easy way to distract yourself," said Dr. Beck.
And there are response cards to help overcome sabotaging thoughts.
"Extra food will always go to waste, either in the trash or on my body," dieter Barbara Nelson says, reading what is on one of her response cards.
That's right, learning to throw away food is part of the Beck plan. For Barbara who concentrates of healthy eating and exercising, she gives herself an occasional treat, half an ice cream sandwich, the other half in the trash.
"It's a world of difference. I am just so happy to be thin," said Barbara.
Barbara has kept her weight off for a year.
