Health: Sounds Of The Season

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
In health, 'tis the season for joy and happiness. But patients in hospitals don't always feel that way.
Now some local hospitals are trying to change that.
Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl is here with the heart warming details.
The spirit of the season is bringing music to Philadelphia Hospitals with bedside performances.
And it's not just about lifting the spirits of patients; studies have shown music can help with healing.
Sounds of the season isn't something you'd expect to hear in hospital rooms.
But that's what's happening at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
"It makes me feel happy," said Adrien Caron, Lymphoma patient.
Seventy-five year old Adrien Caron has Stage 4 Lymphoma. He's been in the hospital for weeks so a little music is a nice change of pace.
"It took my mind away from the hospital," said Caron.
David Falcone volunteers his time to be a part of 'Musicians On Call' a non profit organization that uses music to promote healing for hospital patients.
He travels from room to room offering up a variety of music at patients' bedsides.
"The response has been wonderful. It just has been. I've been doing it for some time and I can only tell you it's inspiring," said David Falcone with 'Musicians On Call.'
Several studies have shown music can aid in the healing process easing pain and relaxing patients.
"We all can relate to how music helps heal and helps us get through the day when we listen to a special song," said Maureen Healy, RN.
Patients in the cancer wing of the hospital said it was a nice surprise, lifting spirits at least for a little bit this holiday season.
"The music was awesome. I mean I liked it a lot. And it was soothing. Very relaxing music," said Barry Spencer Leukemia, patient.
"I know it certainly made me feel better," said Sherry Moore, pancreatic cancer.
"I thought that was wonderful," said Moore.
The volunteers play at Jefferson, as well as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on a weekly basis.
