Health: Unwanted Hair Removal
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
She's 33 and looking for a job and more dates, so Alison Polsky says she pays special attention to beauty problem areas.
"Being a girl, you don't really want to see hair in certain places," said Alison.
It's more common than many realize, plenty of women have hair on their faces and other places.
"My hair is dark and so it does show, and so I've always had that problem," said Alison.
There's waxing and shaving, but they can cause skin irritation. The new alternative is called sugaring.
"I've really been happy with it," said Alison.
It's a combination of sugar, lemon juice, tea tree oil and lavender that's warmed up, similar to waxing. The concoction is applied to the skin and the unwanted hair is lifted away.
"It's all natural. It causes no skin irritation," said Ursula Augustine, owner of Ursula's About PHace Rittenhouse Studio. She says the sugar solution sticks only to the hair, not the skin. So there's less pain as the follicle is removed.
"I love sugaring," said Marlease Bushnell, who has the hair on her chin and lip removed. Waxing caused an allergic reaction on her skin, so she turned to sugaring.
"It's been working. The hair's growing back very fine and not as much as before, so it's worked out wonderfully for me.
After a while, sugaring can damage the follicle causing the hair to stop growing, or it comes back finer and less frequently. Sugaring costs about $20. It can be used anywhere, but at Ursula's it's only done on the face, arms and armpits.
