Health: CurvyGirl Workout

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― In health, ladies listen up … if you are not in such great shape, not so skinny, and intimated about working out, there is a solution just for you. Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has details on the curvy girl classes.

Fitness comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

"It's specifically for larger women and there are no other classes around town like it," Debra Mazda said.

Debra created the Curvy Girl work out after struggling with weight for years.

She used to weigh 315 pounds, after getting down to 165; she wanted to reach out to other plus size women.

"We're a community in here, I know the struggles they go through, I know how they feel, I know how intimidated they can be," Debra said.

"In terms of being in the gym, as a fuller figured person, you always feel like the little tiny girls are talking about you and that doesn't feel good," class member Angela Smedley said.

"It's girls who are a size two or size four who are doing these high intensity workouts," Angela said.

But at Curvy Girls, Mary Krause said she feels right at home, and she's lost 32 pounds in three months.

"I know it is changing my life," Mary said.

The Curvy Girl workout is low impact aerobics, beginners start out slowly and work up to their own comfort level.

"Just because you were a certain size quote un quote double digits does not mean that you can not be fit and healthy," member Catrisha Utley said.

Catrisha lost 70 pounds, feeling good and proud about working out. But it's not just about dieting, the Curvy Girl work out is also a way for larger women to get fit. And then at circle time after class, there's time to talk and be supportive.
