Health: Clear Skin Solution

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has details on the Clear Skin Solution; a growing trend that targets certain kinds of problems.

Johari Smith tries hard to keep her skin healthy, and as a track coach she stays fit and takes care of herself but she still struggles with breakouts.

"My skin is very unpredictable. Sometimes it's clear and sometimes I've got acne that I can't really control and it doesn't seem like anything that I put on it really works," said Johari.

Now dermatologist have started to target ethnic skin types such as African Americans, Asians, Hispanics and those with a Mediterranean background, who have olive skin.

"One size does not fit all, people are fundamentally the same but their skin is not," said Philadelphia dermatologist, Dr. Susan Taylor.

She has created a line of skin care products, cleansers and moisturizers targeted for darker skin tones.

"It is very sensitive and easily irritated and when that happens it leaves dark marks," said Dr. Taylor.

She says that's because darker skin contains higher amounts of the pigment melanin.

"It can cause discolorations, dark marks hyper pigmentation," said Dr. Taylor.

Dr. Taylor's products contain ingredients like glycolic acid, pomegranate, soy and green tea to control breakouts and inflammation.

"You would not find this combination in any other skin care products," said Dr. Taylor.

Johari, who's become an expert using concealers and cover-ups, has tried dozens of products with mixed results.

Now she's excited to try Dr. Taylor's, hoping to finally have pretty skin all the time.

"You want to feel like your skin is clear. It's just part of looking good," said Johari.

Dr. Taylor's can be used by anyone with sensitive, acne prone skin. They cost between $18 and $32 dollars and they're available online.
