Health: Facial Resurfacing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Age spots, wrinkles and even acne scars can be difficult to remove and embarrassing to live with, until now. A new and improved cosmetic procedure is offering many patients new hope and Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has the details.

Linda Bernal says she's tired of the pigment problem on her face.

"I've tried the retinol and the lightening and so many different things and I haven't gotten the results that I wanted," said Linda.

Linda has a condition known as Melasma, which is the discoloration of skin pigments usually on the face.

"I'm hoping to really get rid of or at least lighten it to where I don't have to wear as much make-up," said Linda.

She's come to Dr. Bill Johnson at Innovations MedSpa for a facial resurfacing with the redesigned SmartXide Dot Laser.

"Carbon dioxide laser or CO2 laser has been the gold standard for what's known as facial resurfacing for 15 to 20 years now," said Dr. Johnson.

But according to the doctor, that old laser removed the entire top layer of skin which meant a long recovery.

"People basically weren't able to go to work or go outside for about 30 days," said Dr. Johnson.

Now the SmartXide Dot Laser has changed that, it removes only tiny dots of skin.

"We've now left most of the skin surface intact and so it's able to heal from the sides as well," explained Dr. Johnson.

The new procedure cuts recovery time to just a few days.

Dr. Johnson says Linda will see the improved results in a few weeks.

"It really is your self-esteem, and I feel like that's the only thing you see when you see my face," said Linda.

The cost for a SmartXide Dot Laser treatment in our area is between $1,200 and $1,800. Patients typically need one to two visits.
