Green Scene: Resolutions for 2009
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Some people have resolved to help the earth in 2009, as CBS 3's Liz Keptner shows us.
Jeff Hobbs had a bright idea for a resolution.
"Last year I made the resolution to try to use less energy by changing the light," said Hobbs. He replaced them with compact fluorescent lights in all kinds of styles.
Hobbs will do even more this year. "My first resolution, the first thing I'm going to do, is I'm going to go out and buy the blanket for my gas water heater," said Hobbs.
Jessica Jensen runs Low Impact Living dot com. She says, a $25 hot water heater blanket can cut your energy usage. Also adjust the temperature setting.
"You can turn it down to 120 degrees or medium setting, and that'll save a lot of energy," said Jensen.
Another idea: Make a promise to watch what you wash. "Only run full loads of laundry or dishes," said Jensen. "You use the same amount of energy to power those machines, regardless of the load size."
Another idea: Compost your food waste. "You'll cut your trash stream in half, and you make a great mulch that you can use to fertilize your lawn or your plants," said Jensen/
Finally, check with your local utility to see if you can buy renewable energy.
Jeff Hobbs says these are goals he can keep.
"I think that my odds of keeping my green resolutions next year and for years to come is going to be pretty easy," said Hobbs.
