Green With Envy: How To Recycle Your Wardrobe

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―

Are you looking for a fresh way to update your look? Why not recycle your wardrobe?

"It's not just your bottles and cans anymore. It's your purses, shoes, hats, blouses and pants," said Leslie Weinstein of Philadelphia's Buffalo Exchange.

The store offers customers the opportunity to buy, sell and trade fashionable clothing, all while reducing the more than eleven million tons of textile waste generated in landfills each year, according to E.P.A. estimates.

"Americans love to shop, so we want to make sure they do it in a green way," explained Weinstein.

This Sunday, you can recycle your wardrobe for free as part of Greenfest Philly's one-day street fair being held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2nd and South streets. It is the largest environmental event in our area.

"The Eco Exchange Clothing Swap itself is for women and men of all ages and sizes. You must bring a minimum of five items," said Eco Exchange Clothing Swap Coordinator Dara Donolow.

Donolow recommends going through your closet and getting rid of any items you haven't worn in 6 months. The new and used items must be free of stains and holes, cleaned and ready to wear.

From there, just sort, stack and pack into re-usable bags. Then, get ready to browse for all your latest eco-friendly fashion finds!
