Green Scene: Paper Retriever

EAST NORRITON, Pa. (CBS 3) ― You know recycling is good for the earth. But did you know recycling also can make your school or church some extra money? We went to one place where they put their trash to work for them!

At Saint Titus School in East Norriton, everyone plays a part in saving the earth.

"Since everybody uses paper every day during school, they just recycle it," said 7th grader Brianna Stenz.

The kids recycle tests, workbooks, drawings, and they fill up boxes in every classroom.

It's estimated that paper makes up 40 percent of landfill space! But that paper's not coming from St. Titus.

"We collected 79 tons of paper, and that does calculate out to saving a landfill -- 245 cubic yards," said St. Titus principal Joanne Zinn.

Even better, the paper makes money for the school. If the school collects enough paper, it earns money and qualifies to win contests by paper manufacturer Abitibi throught the Paper Retriever program.

So every student pitches in. Neighbors help out too.

"It keeps it out of the landfill, and it also helps the church," said one man.

St. Titus already has won $2200 in contests. To students Danielle Ellick and Brianna Stenz, it's about more than money.

"If you recycle the paper, it can make the world a better place for you to live in," said Danielle.

Watch the video we shot of almost every single child at St. Titus doing their part to recycle!
