Green Scene: Greener Shoes

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―

The color of fashion is changing.  Whatever the color of shoe, more customers want to know if it's green.

"Many of our customers now are asking these questions when they come in to make a purchase," said Wayne Orr of the Walking Company.

And more green shoes -- green as in eco friendly -- are coming to the marketplace.

Actress and director Natalie Portman is known for her vegan lifestyle. She started a line of vegan shoes.  No leather, just synthetic materials such as fabric and plastic, so that no animals are harmed in the making of her shoes.

But if you must have leather, there are alternatives, as we found at the Walking Company in Cherry Hill Mall.

Wayne Orr told us about these shoes by Simple called Planet Walkers.  They are leather, but the company takes pains to make them more eco-friendly when they tan the leather.

"If you use a natural process, one which uses fewer chemicals, you have less chemical waste material," said Orr.

But what about the rest of the shoe? The sole is earth-friendly, too. "This sole uses a combination of latex, rubber, and recycled car tire composite," said Orr. "This will not be in a landfill a hundred years from now.  It will dissolve in the soil."

Just some ways to enjoy fashion without fretting about the environment.
