Green Scene: Boutiques And Big Box Stores
MOORESTOWN, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
Green is popping up in both big box stores and small boutiques.
One small boutique owner talked to us about her hopes for her store.
On Main Street in Moorestown, New Jersey, Kerry Meyer is hoping her little shop snags business from the big box stores.
Her store is called Green Earth Blue Sky. Everything inside is either made from renewable materials (such as bamboo) or recycled trash.
"We also have upcycled items such as bracelets made out of soda tabs, or a license plate that's made into a photo album," said Meyer.
Meyer says her big competition is big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target.
For example, Target now sells organic cotton onesies and kid t-shirts -- and often at lower prices than boutiques.
But Meyer hopes to compete.
"You can go to a store and get a $7 shirt, and here, my average price for a shirt is maybe $27," said Meyer.
"But it's a purposeful purchase."
Whatever happens, Meyer doesn't think the green trend will fade away like last year's fashion.
"I really wouldn't even call it a trend," she said.
"I think that it's going to be the way that people do things."
Meyer says despite the recession, business is good.
