Wall Of Heroes To Honor Gloucester Co. Soldiers

WOODBURY, N.J. (CBS 3) ― Families in Gloucester County will soon have a new way to honor brave loved ones who gave their lives serving our country.

A Wall of Heroes, which will be built in Woodbury, will honor their life and memory.

County Freeholders announced Wednesday the project that will honor each and every Gloucester County member of the military killed during wartime since the birth of this nation.

"I lost a couple friends in the Vietnam war. I am thinking of them as we speak right now as they could be standing beside me, but of course they are not and it makes me very sad," Marine Corps Veteran Ed Tuso said.

Philadelphia muralist and artist Zachary Bird will bring the service men and women to life, drawing in vibrant color with ink that is designed to last 1000 years.

"In the absence of any real knowledge of who they are, it's going to be with the magnitude of their service and just wondering who they were," Bird said.

Bird will lean on photos, even if the soldier killed is not shown in uniform.

"We will have a very, very strong knowledge of how the uniforms are to be and the various medals that would accommodate each soldier," Bird said.

The challenge facing veterans group working on the project is going back and finding all the families of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"A name is one thing, we want to know where they lived, we want to know what service they were in," Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen Sweeney said. "The family that hears us says 'you know something my grandfather fought in World War II and I got a picture of him' please contact our Veterans Affairs office."
