Philly Mexican Restaurant Cooking Up The Past

Frog legs, grasshoppers and veal brains, oh my!

A Philadelphia eatery is taking a look back to its past by offering diners a variety of unique dishes for the week.

Popular Mexican restaurant Xochitl, located on the 400 block of 2nd Street in Society Hill, is taking a step back into the 1800s.

Owner and head chef Dionico Jimenez said the week long showcase of traditional pre-Hispanic cuisine is in honor of Mexico's first indigenous President Benito Juarez.

"(He was) considered the father of the Mexican independence," Jimenez said.

The special menu contains odd delicacies like chicken with pine cones, breaded veal brains and grasshopper tacos served with fresh guacamole.

To the uninitiated, grasshoppers have a crunchy, greasy taste according to Jimenez.

The special menu runs until March 21.

Jimenez said many traditional Mexican dishes can be easily made at home, including his basic guacamole recipe below:

Simple Guacamole
1 1/2 ripe avocados
1 tablespoon onion
1 tablespoon jalapeno pepper (or more if you like it spicy)
cilantro
salt

Pick an avocado that his soft, but not squishy. Scoop the insides into a bowl and mix with onion, jalapeno adding cilantro and salt to taste. Mash the ingredients together and you have a basic guacamole. To this you can add a variety of ingredients, such as pomegranate seeds and blue cheese.
