What Makes Up "Bad Biology"?
Ted Scheid
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
While he may not be a household name, cult horror-comedy film director Frank Henenlotter has earned a following in his bizarre career spanning over two decades.
Best known for his 1982 film about a deformed Siamese twin on a killing spree "Basketcase" and its two sequels, Henenlotter has made a living creating gorey special effects laden stories focusing on the outcasts of society.
His latest film "Bad Biology," which is his first film in 16 years, centers on a woman with a unique physical condition and her discovery of a man seemingly made just for her. Co-written and produced by hip hop artist R.A. 'The Rugged Man' Thornburn and with a soundtrack by Prince Paul, 'Bad Biology' is a disturbed, humorous look into human sexuality.
In honor of his accomplishments, Henenlotter was awarded the 2008 Phantasmagoria Award by the 17th Annual Philadelphia Film Festival.
CBS3.com spoke to Henenlotter about his inspiration and why it's important to stay out of the mainstream.
CBS3.com: Is there anything that shocks you?
FH: Plenty shocks me. You take what shocks you and turn it into a joke. Everything in the film shocked me, I was deeply offended by it.
CBS3.com: So you can be offended?
FH: I'm very easily offended, that's why I can do that kind of *expletive*
CBS3.com: Are we going to have to wait another 16 years for Frank Henenlotter film?
FH: Maybe
I have no plans, you have to understand that. R.A. ('The Rugged Man' Thornburn) wants to do another one, so hopefully we'll be doing one this fall.
CBS3.com: Where does an idea like Bad Biology come from?
FH: From the deepest depths of depravity. It's coming up with something that you figure no one else is going to make. Probably won't and never will again.
CBS3.com: So you're always going to be fighting against the mainstream?
FH: Absolutely. Why? There's enough of that.
