Officers Honored At 2009 Hero Thrill Show
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Year after year, the Hero Thrill Show kicks off with a roar, then keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats with masterful moves and maneuvers aboard motorcycles and bicycles.
"We think of all of our fallen brothers and sisters in the line of duty, it gives us the extra push go over the top and do the job," said Officer Jim Trainer.
The 2009 Philadelphia Hero Thrill Show, held in the parking lot of Lincoln Financial Field, featured motorcycle demonstrations and performances by the Philadelphia Police and Fire Pipes and Drums and the Police Patrol Motorcycle Drill Team.
"We raise money for our own," said an officer. "We don't forget, and we make sure that our families are taken care of."
This year, the Stackwitz sisters received a scholarship check for over $69,000. The girl's father, Sergeant Andrew Stackwitz was killed in the line of duty in 2008.
"With the scholarship money I know I can go to Temple (University) and everything will be good, I'll make my father proud," said Katelyn Stackwitz.
The family of fallen officer John Pawlowski, who was killed in the line of duty in February, was among those honored at Saturday's show.
"It means so much to us," said Retired Lieutenant John Pawlowski, Officer Pawlowski's father. "This thrill show is to raise money to make sure that Johnny (the slain officer's young son) has an education. It's good to know that this is one part of his life that is taken care of."
According to event organizers, four years ago a crowd of only 400 showed up at the event, Saturday's show had a crowd over one thousand.
The event was originally schedules for Saturday, September 12, but was postponed for rain.
