School Taking Precautions After Swine Flu Scare
RADNOR (CBS 3) ―
A Delaware County high school announced they will be closed for the rest of the week after confirmation that one student contracted the H1N1 virus.
Officials at Archbishop John Carroll High School canceled classes Wednesday after one ill student was confirmed as having Swine Flu. Two additional students are suspected of having the illness. Those affected are reportedly members of the school's cheerleading team.
Archbishop John Carroll High School principal David Dickens said 366 students called out Wednesday, with many reporting cold and flu-like symptoms.
Dickens said they believe the illness may have spread Saturday night at the school's homecoming dance.
On Monday, 45 students went to see the school nurse with flu-like symptoms and 19 were sent home. On Tuesday, the attendance rate dropped to 82 percent and the Swine Flu case was confirmed.
Principal Dickens says a letter was sent home notifying parents of the illnesses. Wednesday, the attendance rate dropped to 62 percent and out of 979 students, 366 did not attend class. At 11 a.m., officials decided to send students home.
As a precaution, the school will remain closed for the rest of the week while crews sanitize the building. All sports practices and games have also been canceled.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, any student with flu-like symptoms should stay home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the uses of medications.
