Good Samaritans Save Mom, Baby On I-95
NEWPORT, Del. (CBS 3) ―
Delaware State Police said the actions of two Good Samaritans saved the lives of a family of three on I-95.
Drivers
witnessed a vehicle visibly on fire driving on southbound I-95 near Newport just after 7 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses told police the driver briefly pulled over, but then continued on the interstate for nearly a quarter of a mile.
"There were actually pieces of the car that were falling that were actually glowing from the fire," Delaware State Police Sergeant Walter Newton said.
When the burning vehicle came to a stop a second time, police said the engine compartment was fully engulfed in flames. A passenger, identified as Cleveland Scott, freed himself from the burning vehicle.
Anthony Parson said he and a second Good Samaritan helped the driver, Donna Johnson, escape the wreckage. Johnson became concerned after spotting a car seat in the back of the vehicle.
"We asked her, 'was there a child in the car?' because we noticed the car seat. It took her approximately 45 seconds to respond to us, at that time she said, 'Yes,'" Parson said.
The Good Samaritans pulled the six-month-old child from the vehicle as rescue crews arrived at the scene to douse the flames. The car is said to be a total loss.
Johnson, Scott and their child were taken to the Christiana Hospital with smoke inhalation and are expected to be treated and released.
Both Scott and Johnson were charged with reckless endangering a child. Johnson is also facing charges of driving under the influence of drugs, driving with a suspended license, no valid insurance and related offenses.
