Vineland Police Seek Murder, Robbery Suspect
VINELAND, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
Police in Vineland are looking for a suspect in connection with a murder and robbery that occurred late Saturday night.
Police investigating reports of a robbery in the area of 7th and Montrose Streets received information from a cab driver who had allegedly witnessed the incident.
The cab driver's description led police to a suspect they pursued on foot until he entered a house on Montrose Street. While police were pursuing the suspect they received further information about a male who had been shot in the head in the same area.
Investigators say Octavio Contreras, 43, was approached by two Hispanic males while sitting on his front porch on the 300 block of Montrose. Conreras was shot in the head after being robbed of $60 and a cell phone, he was pronounced dead at the scene by Advanced Life Support.
During the course of the investigation police obtained a warrant to enter the home the suspect, identified as John Ramirez, 25, was in. Ramirez, a self admitted member of the Latin King Street Gang, fled the home along with another suspect only described as a Hispanic male wearing a grey or blue hooded shirt.
While in the home police collected enough evidence, including a Ruger .357 handgun, to link Ramirez and the other suspect to the murder of Octavio Contreras.
Crime Stoppers of Vineland is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest of Ramirez or the additional suspect in this incident. If you have any information please call 856-691-0346 to speak anonymously.
