3 On Your Side: Purses To Portfolios
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
How well do you understand your finances? Your Money Team
knows that most of us learn over the years through trial and error!
For decades it was the man of the house that dealt with the finances, but these days more and more women are taking charge. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan gets a few lessons from the experts.
At the Wynnefield library women are learning about the importance of insurance. Their instructor is Kim Cooper of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Delaware Valley.
"I like to tell people that insurance is not sexy, it ain't the sexy stuff. It's not five easy ways to get rich, insurance is managing risk," Cooper said.
The women are enrolled in Purses To Portfolios, a free financial literacy program offered by Consumer Credit Counseling Service.
"Women are more independent, they are more savvy, they are looking to take care of their finances in a better way so they come out to these classes," Cooper said.
The weekly topics include budgeting for the successful woman, protecting a woman's worth, and the why behind the buy. Alicia Carter is enrolled in the class and tells us she is certainly learning a lot.
"What I didn't realize was how much my emotions impact the way that I save my money, spend my money, the way that I feel about my money," Carter said.
Deanna Dunlap is attending with her mother Alice who is part of the 3 On Your Side Fix Your Finances project. Dunlap is proud of the fact that her mother is taking charge of her money as she prepares for retirement.
"She's not afraid to say I don't know much about money and you know finances and how the whole money world works," Dunlap said.
But with the help of Purses To Portfolio's she and others are certainly learning.
"We get a new person or a new group of people, five to ten new people every week because someone shot them an email or someone said hey listen you have to come out to this class," Cooper said.
