3 On Your Side: Holiday Gift Registries

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― In the old days, kids used to make their lists and check them twice and it was up to Santa to determine who was naughty and who was nice. But these days, adults are taking that holiday tradition a bit further. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan tells us about a new twist to take the guesswork out of gift buying.

For some, shopping is a joy. "It's just lovely, it's heaven," said one shopper. Another said, "It's a family bonding moment."

For others, it's a chore. "It's way too crowded, I hate the crowds," an unhappy shopper said. "The lines are too long," said another.

And it's more aggravating when you don't know what to buy people. A growing number of folks are taking away the guess work by creating holiday gift registries online, listing exactly what they want.

"Now it's starting to become more acceptable and it just makes life so much easier," said Jill Anderson with MyRegistry.com. She says customers just pick the gifts they want from dozens of different stores, add it to their registry, send it to family and friends and a holiday wish list is born. "It eliminates having to return any gift." Anderson added.

But not everyone is sold. "It's impersonal," said Gloria Petersen, an etiquette advisor. She says an unsolicited registry could be perceived as presumptuous, too, which is why a customer should check first with family before sending one out. She says people should also refrain from registering for very expensive items.

But are shoppers ready to give the holiday registry a ringing endorsement? "I personally wouldn't like that," said one shopper. "I like the whole surprise of gifts and I don't really like telling people what to get me." she added. Another shopper said "I don't think that's very fun."

This idea stemmed from the use of registries for wedding and baby gifts. But etiquette experts say this is different and no one should assume just because they have this registry that people will use it.
