3 On Your Side: Best Steam Mops

by Jim Donovan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Tired of cleaning your floors? Let's face it. Trudging around the house with a bucket and mop can often feel like you're breaking your back. But there may be a better way. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan checks it out.

Mopping is no fun, but the right steam mop can let you do the job with a lot less effort.

So the Good Housekeeping Research Institute put 3 steam cleaners to the test: Lysol Steam Cleaning Mop, Reliable Steamboy and Steamfast Multi-Purpose Steam Cleaner.

"Steam cleaners are great because they use the power of steam to clean your floors and you don't have to use chemicals. The hot steam can cut through grime and grease and it also is a natural disinfectant," Nate Benforado, Good Housekeeping Institute.

Testers plopped chocolate syrup, ketchup and fruit juice on a variety of surfaces and let the spills set for two hours and then went to work.

"Both the Steamfast and Steamboy took under thirty seconds to clean up while the Lysol took over three minutes," said Nate Benforado.

"The Steamfast did best overall. It was easy to cut through chocolate syrup and juice and ketchup on a variety of surfaces and very easy to load and push around and maneuver," Benforado said.

The $80 Steamfast also comes with several attachments, like a wire brush for scouring baked-on oven grease. If you remove the handle, you can use it as a handheld device to clean sinks, counters, ovens and other household surfaces.

Good Housekeeping says if you use a steam mop, be sure you use the right amount of steam. If you use too little, the mop won't clean effectively, if you use too much steam, the surface of the floor can have too much moisture.
