3 On Your Side: Younger, Healthier Looking Skin
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Who doesn't want younger, healthier looking skin? So many products claim to hold the secret, but you can't always believe what you hear. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan has a look at some new treatments that deliver on their promise.
Can cosmetic devices and creams transform your skin the way that expensive prescription products and doctor's treatments do? In some cases, yes!
"Certainly there are great products out on the market available to the consumer that can benefit patient's skin," said dermatologist Ariel Ostad.
Take for example, the sun. Every time you burn your skin, you damage your DNA. But experts have learned that topical niacinamide, found in products by Olay, DDF and Canyon Ranch, can repair the DNA and lessen the damage especially if applied before sun exposure.
"Niacinamide can really reduce the brown spots on your face caused by the sun that can really age you," said Leesa Suzman with Good Housekeeping.
And now you can buy small handheld LED devices, like the do-it-yourself Omnilux Clear-U. It costs about $225 and contains the same blue light that dermatologists use to reduce the bacteria and inflammation that causes acne.
"When testers used the product twice a week for four weeks, they found that their pimple count was reduced on average 69 percent," said Suzman.
And finally, anti-wrinkle creams like this one from skin authority, which is about $125, has been shown to reduce crow's feet and worry lines.
Now, prescription retinoids are still the gold standard for wrinkle reduction, but some of these newer lotions are less drying and irritating to skin. Plus, you can get them over the counter.
