3 On Your Side: Southwest & AirTran Airfare Sales
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
If you've been waiting to plan a trip hoping that airfares would fall, well you may be in luck. As Your Money Team helps you to "Survive in '09", 3-On Your Side's Jim Donovan reports that two airlines that fly out of Philadelphia are running sales. But don't take too long to think about it. The seats are going fast.
Earlier Tuesday, Air Tran Airways kicked off a nationwide 3-day fare sale. Some of the fares are low as $39 one way. The tickets are available for purchase through this Thursday and are good for travel through November 11. A 10 day advance purchase is required and the lowest fares are available for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Meanwhile Southwest is running a 48-hour sale for destinations across the country. The fares are $30, $60, or $90 based on mileage. Travel up to 400 miles for $30 one way. For travel between 400 and 750 miles fares are $60 one way and for travel beyond 750 miles you'll pay $90 one way. In this case, tickets must be purchased online through Wednesday and are good for travel from September 9 through November 18.
The fares involved in these sales do not include tax or airport charges. Also if you find the same fare at both airlines and you have luggage to check, I would suggest that you make your reservation Southwest, unlike Air Tran and many other airlines, Southwest allows you to check two bags for free. AirTran will charge you $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second and those extra fees can add up fast.
