Markell Preparing To Be Sworn In As Del. Governor
NEWARK, Del. (AP) ―
At the stroke of midnight, Delaware will have a new governor.
Friends and family of Democratic Gov.-elect Jack Markell were to gather late Monday at the University of Delaware in Newark, where he'll be sworn in at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.
Markell opted for the midnight ceremony so as not to conflict with the presidential inauguration ceremonies later Tuesday in Washington. With Delaware's Joe Biden to be sworn in as vice president, Markell wanted to accommodate Delawareans who want to participate in the Washington festivities or watch them on TV.
Markell plans to travel to the nation's capital after being sworn in.
Markell is a Newark native. His father taught at UD and his wife is a graduate of the university.
