Striking N.J. Catholic Teachers Approve Contract

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) ― Teachers who went on strike at three southern New Jersey Catholic high schools have overwhelmingly approved a four-year contract agreement with the Camden Diocese.

The agreement was approved Friday by a 131-5 vote.

Teachers will be back in their classrooms Monday at Holy Spirit in Absecon, Camden Catholic in Cherry Hill and Paul VI in Haddonfield. They had walked off the job this week in a dispute over salaries and health benefits.

The salary agreement calls for a step increase of $1,140 each year for the first two years, or about 2.6 percent each year. In the third and fourth years teachers will get the step increase plus an additional 1 percent.

Teachers will pay 5 percent of their health insurance costs in the third and fourth year.
