3 On Your Side: Spa & Salon Savings
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Is the tough economy putting a crimp in your beauty budget? Have you starting stretching your six week root touch-up to seven or eight weeks?
Maybe you've completely written off indulgences like pedicures, facials and massages? Well Your Money Team has you covered. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan tells us about a secret to salon and spa savings.
Need a hair cut? A little color? Maybe your nails are looking a bit shabby?
Full service salons cater to your every need, but it won't come cheap!
Something Christine Miller knows all too well.
"You'd walk out spending $200 dollars by the time you tipped every different person that helped you. I have children and I can't afford to be putting out that kind of money every six weeks when I need my color touched up," said Miller.
But at the Rizzieri Aveda School for Beauty and Wellness in Marlton, New Jersey, Christine can get the same type of services for 25, 50 even 75 percent less than elsewhere.
"I can get a cut and color and walk out of here for under $50 dollars and that's with tips," said Miller.
If you're blown away by the price, you're probably wondering how they do it?
Simple, the staff is comprised of students.
But school director Meg Stezzi says they're closely supervised by professionals.
And business is booming.
"We're very fortunate because we do have that less expensive service and sometimes it's very nice for someone's pocketbook," said Stezzi.
Lorraine Juliano was thinking with her wallet when she turned to the school for a $47 deluxe facial. At other salons, she's paid $75.
"I'm excited, because I really do enjoy taking care of my skin and I love facials," said Juliano.
Even the cost of a full body, 50 minute massage will have you less tense, only $35 dollars!
"It's a great opportunity for a person who may not have the income to afford a massage in a salon or spa to receive one about half the price," said Raili York with the Rizzieri School for the Healing Arts.
In Philadelphia, Jean Madeline is known for its full service salons, but they have three institutes as well, including one in University City. Hair cuts for men and women are a flat $16 and that's not all.
"We can do facials, we can do body treatments, hair color, nails hair treatments," said Danielle Lehman with Jean Madeline Aveda Institute.
How much will you save?
"On average, I would say half maybe even 75-percent," said Lehman.
Meghan Cosgrove has sampled treatments from head to toe.
"I've had my hair cut. I've had my hair dyed. I've had my hair just blown out for the day. And today I'm getting a pedicure," said Cosgrove.
