Police: NJ Man Shot, Killed In NC Home Invasion

HALIFAX, N.C. (CBS3/AP) ― Authorities say a New Jersey man has been killed after he forced his way into a North Carolina man's home.

Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier told WRAL-TV that 61-year-old Carlton Burgess, of Lumberton, N.J., was shot in the chest Friday morning.

Investigators say Burgess knocked on Marcel Alston's door in Halifax, then forced his way inside.

"The victim answered the door, and once he answered, the suspect came into the house and began assaulting him," said Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier.

Authorities say Alston was shot in the buttocks as he ran up the stairs, but managed to get his own gun out of his bedroom and shoot Burgess.

Frazier says Alston told police he and Burgess have a long-running dispute, but he hadn't seen the other man in several years.

Carolyn Burgess, Carlton's wife, said Frazier was a friend of hers from school whom she had met 21-years earlier when her and her husband were having marital problems.

"He assumed it was an affair, which it was not," said Carolyn Burgess. "In his mind, that's all he thought about, that it was an affair. So for three months, that's all he dwelled on."

The sheriff says the killing appears to be self-defense, but prosecutors will decide if charges are filed.

Carolyn Burgess says her husband suffered from post traumatic stress from time served in Vietnam and Desert Storm. She also said her husband began acting erratically and drinking about 3-months ago.

"I pray that God gave him enough breath to call on his Savior Jesus Christ and ask forgiveness," said Burgess.
