Brotherly Love: Lesson Learned From Ghana Voyage

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Sometimes you have to see the world from a different perspective to appreciate what you have. Five students from Temple University recently traveled to Africa to learn the true meaning of Brotherly Love.

A motto for the African country of Ghana preaches freedom and justice, but its people still live in extreme poverty. Thousands travel to the impoverished nation every year to offer a helping hand.

Five local college students learned an important life lesson after a January journey.

"I would tell people to value what we have here, we take for granted what we have and the relationships we have with people," student Ashley Seneko said.

Seneko traveled to Ghana with several friends from Youth for Christ, a Christian organization that helps build schools in rural villages. It wasn't long into the trip that the junior at Temple University realized it was no ordinary student experience.

"The one thing that all of us were kind of amazed about was, when we were building this school, we were building this school for children that can't afford to go to school during the day, they've been going to a school at night," Seneko said.

Ashley and friends like Stephen Kuhn said the trip was very emotional at times.

"I've been on trips like this before, but just herein the United States and going to a different country and seeing the level of poverty that was present there was so much greater than what we had here in terms of conditions that it brings a whole new light to your perspective about what you see here versus what's actually happening in the rest of the world."

But the trip was such a positive experience for Ashley; she can't wait to go back. In fact, she's trying to go on a trip in July.

"We're going to be continuing to work on the school, hopefully getting some walls done, the floor done," Ashley said.
