Brotherly Love: Biking Across America
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
How do you pay tribute to a family member who has died? A local man decided to ride his bike across America. Now he's back.
It was February when we met David Shuey as he trained for the ride of a lifetime across America for arthritis.
"Part of the idea for the ride is to let people know who have arthritis they can live an active life," said Shuey.
Mission accomplished. Shuey rode 65 days from coast to coast, riding cross country and then to Cape May, New Jerseyfrom sea to shining sea.
"If you want to encounter America and see what America is really all about, ride a bicycle across the country," said Shuey.
The whole trip was 3606 miles. He says the best part was sharing his fight with arthritis, that you don't have to let it defeat you.
"I spent a day with 45 kids at a JV rheumatoid camp, a challenge camp, to show kids that have arthritis that they can do extraordinary things," said Shuey.
But he says there were dark days, too. He thought of his mother Marcey, who spent the last 15 years of her life in a wheelchair because of arthritis.
"There were days I was grinding it out, and I'm up a hill in the rain and no shoulder on the road," said Shuey, "I had to draw on the reserves and thought of my mom."
Shuey says he thought of her even during the good times, a trip that not only changed his life but those he met along the way.
"It was chance of a lifetime to do it, and I was honored with the privilege to make a difference and raise awareness of arthritis," said Shuey.
So far he's raised $65,123, and the money is still coming in.
