Behind The Blog: Unbreaded.com

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― For Philly food blogger Ben Kessler, there's a lot more to a sandwich than what comes between the bread. That's why the 23-year-old self-described gadget geek makes it a point to examine Philly's signature sammies, then share his knowledge of the stories that go along with them.

Name: Ben Kessler
Age: 23
Blog: Unbreaded

What's your favorite blog of all time? It's hard to pick a favorite because I read a TON of blogs. I'd have to go with Boston Globe's "The Big Picture". It features hi-res photographs of current events, and whenever I show it to someone, they are blown away.

What's the best blog post you've ever written? I'm a big fan of these two:
Tiffin Brings Kati Rolls To The Streets Of Philadelphia
Beer, Bourbon And Burgers At Village Whiskey

What are three tips for aspiring bloggers?
1. Content is king, be creative, and original
2. You don't need to be a professional photographer, but focus on taking pictures that will attract readers to your posts
3. Use all the social media tools available to create a voice for your blog. If you are personal with your fan base, they will connect with you and visit your site more often. I'm a big fan of Twitter, Flickr and Facebook.

Describe your typical work day: I wake up at 7am, roll out of bed, and drink an entire French press of coffee. Then I sit at the computer, check email and get started going through all 200 of the RSS feeds I subscribe to. I spend the rest of the day looking up hot stories on sandwiches, reading restaurant news, and scouting new reviews for Unbreaded. On a day that we review a restaurant, I head out with my camera and Moleskine notebook, sit down with the chef and talk shop.

What's the last website you visited? Uncrate.com, amazing site for gadgets and gear for men.

Do you facebook, myspace or tweet? Yes!

What's sitting next to your computer? Right now, my iPhone, noise cancelling headphones and another computer (my netbook for on the go)

When's bedtime? Usually 2:00am.

What do you hate most about the web? I hate the people out there who ruin it for everyone else. The scammers, hackers, etc. These people tend to scare less web-savvy people away from spending time online. A surprising number of people are still scared to order online or use a social networking site like Facebook.

Who is your arch-rival in the blogosphere? I don't have one! We like to think what we're doing is unique and we try to stay as friendly as possible with other bloggers, we must unite!

When's the last time you snail mailed a letter? Last week actually, to my 80 year old uncle in California.

DrudgeHuffington Post or TMZ? HuffPo

Do you wear glasses? Yes, but not full time

What makes a good blog? Informative and entertaining content that is to the point, and trustworthy.

Why should we visit yours? Many people believe Unbreaded is strictly a restaurant review site, but that's not true. Our goal is to tell the stories behind the sandwiches, the history, and convey the personalities of the chef's that create them. And, we have beautiful, mouthwatering photographs!

You can catch Ben Kessler this Sunday at the 2009 Sandwich Smash to benefit Philabundance. For more on the event and to purchase tickets, click here.
