Behind The Blog: A Story Behind The Picture

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― If you have a passion for photographic expression and the written word, mkcphotography could be the next stop on your blog roll.

Not only does this artist blogger strive to offer her readers a unique perspective through pictures and posts, she does it while raising two little boys!

Time is of the essence for this proud Mom, so don't waste her time with any clichés about her art work … or anything for that matter.

Name: Michelle Ciarlo-Hayes
Age: 33
Blog: mkcphotography

What's your favorite blog of all time?

I have two: Apartment Therapy (because we can all dream, can't we? *sigh*) and their affiliate children's blog Ohdeeoh (they gave my my first big feature -such a huge thing for an emerging artist!)

What's the best blog post you've ever written?

I'd have to say the post about our dog Bronco, after I took his portrait lastfall. I usually have lovely comments from my readers, but this one really seemed to resonate with everyone and I'm touched bythe response it still generates.

What are three tips for aspiring photographer/bloggers?

1) Tell people somethingthey don't know! Share your expertise, your inspirations, your funny story, but make sure it's unique.

2) Write regularly. Even if it's just once a week, like me, keep to a schedule because it will make you a more disciplined writer (*she says as she runs off to write her Friday blog she hasn't gotten to yet*)

3) Please don't use cliches! As soon as someone reads "once in a lifetime," or "beautiful beyond words," they're going to moveon. Make sure every word you write portrays your unique voice.

Describe your typical work day.

*laughs* Well, I have two little boys, so it's anything but typical! I have a studio in my home in which I shoot my still-life images, so I try to work when they are playing happily in the next room...which lasts about 30 seconds. Nap-time is when I speak with customers and galleries, and check email. After the boys are asleep, I can work on the post-processing of the images I shot that day...my digital darkroom involves the couch, lots of coffee, and hopefully a new episode of Project Runway. The best part of my job is heading out for a morning of photographing outdoors with the boys - I love to involve them, and they really understand what I do for a living (in addition to being the short-order chef/diaperchanger/chauffeur, of course).

What's the last website you visited?

Besides Facebook, lol? I was actually looking for - and found - the direct link to the exhibit schedule for First Friday Main Line! I'm really excited about the opportunity!

Do you facebook, myspaceor tweet?

I Facebook and Tweet like a fiend :-) I've made wonderful connections and use both sites to share my new work and posts.

What's sitting next toyour computer?

My two-year-old: he's built a fort out of blankets and is hiding from an imaginary tornado.

When's bedtime?

Last night was around 1a.m. - a fairly early night for me!

What do you hate most about the web?

I have to be very disciplined or I end up surfing the E! News Fashion Police reports when I should be doing something productive.

Who is your arch-rival in the blogosphere?

People who use cliches.

When's the last time you snail mailed a letter?

I appreciate thereminder - I need to send my grandmother a thank-you note...

Drudge, Huffington Postor TMZ?

Huffington Post - mydear friend Alice Crisci writes for them. She's a breast cancer survivor (at age 33) and her posts are incredible.

Do you wear glasses?

Not anymore! I did in high school but randomly outgrew my need for them after I turned 25. Apparently getting old does occasionally have benefits.

What makes a good blog?

It shows me something beautiful, it makes me laugh, and it's memorable.

Why should we visit yours?

For all the reasons above.
