Wexler Gallery To Host First Friday Exhibit

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―

From two and three dimensional art pieces to cast human skulls, Wexler Gallery on Third street in Old City is one of 40 galleries to open its doors for First Friday.

The gallery will present 'In Between,' a collection focusing on life's pains and pleasures.

Associate Director Sienna Freeman said, "They basically are paintings that are there to remind you of man's mortality."

The exhibit includes works by famed international artist Damian Hirst.

Freeman said, "His work totally blurs the line between pop culture, art and science."

The cast sterling silver and platinum human skull goes for about $250,000.

"What you're seeing down there is not just an object, but a representation of what was a person at one time. So, there's this idea of sensationalism that goes with his work and is reflected in the price," said Freeman.

Gallery goers can view a print of Damian Hirst's 'For the love of God,' piece, which has the highest price tag by any living artist. It sold to a private collector for $100 million. The print sold for just $28,000.

More affordable and functional items can be found on the second floor of the gallery.

Freeman said, "We try to keep the prices for walls under $5,000 to reach out to young collectors."

If you're not in the market to buy, Wexler Gallery invites you to browse free of charge.
