Parents On Facebook: Confirm Or Ignore?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― It's the most popular social networking site in cyber space... a place to post updates, share pictures and exchange silly remarks with friends.

But with the changing face of facebook, many are forced to answer this question: Would you friend your folks on facebook?

That's what twenty-two-year-old Chad Glielmi was faced with when he logged in to his account last month.

"I saw two requests from my parents. Immediate decline," said Chad.

Not because he doesn't love them or because they don't get along, but as Chad puts it, because it's "dangerous territory."

"We have a great relationship, but you have to draw the line somewhere," said Chad.

Still, that hasn't hampered his parents facebook fascination. The duo, who say they joined for "professional reasons" now find themselves logging on to the site daily. They've even begun their own facebook friend competition.

"It's like we're in elementary school," explained Mrs. Glielmi.

"Yeah, it's like I'm asking someone to go to prom or something," said Mr. Glielmi.

And the Glielmi's aren't alone. According to a March 2009 Nielson report, the site's largest area of growth has come from people ages thirty-five to forty-nine. That's twenty-four million users that could include your parents.

"I think it's incumbent on parents to be very circumspect and not be too intrusive," said Temple University Psychologist Frank Farley.

Farley suggests parents talk to their kids before they join facebook. It's good advice, but if they're anything like Chad, they're not about to cave any time soon.

But, we will. Friend Digital Journalist Nicole Brewer on facebook now!
