For The Love Of Mom: Save Big This Mother's Day

A Look At Inexpensive Ways To Show Mom You Care

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―

With Mother's Day just around the corner, the time has come to start thinking about ways to make this Sunday a day your Mom will never forget.

Still, planning the perfect day can seem daunting when you think about the high cost of floral arrangements, gift baskets and spa packages.

That's why CBS3.com teamed up with the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) to bring you inexpensive yet innovative options for Mother's Day.

Director of Media Relations Cara Schneider said "Philadelphia is a great place to celebrate the holiday that was actually born here 100 years ago."

That's when Philadelphia resident Anna Jarvis held the first Mother's Day celebration in Philadelphia on May 19, 1908 in honor of her mother Anna Marie.

This year, Schneider suggests celebrating Mom with a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Every Sunday, the museum allows visitors to "pay as you wish," making the artful outing extremely affordable.

Another option includes a historic tour of Philadelphia where the family can learn about two great mothers of history: Betsy Ross and Abigail Adams.

Schneider suggests taking a trip to the Independence Visitors center, which displays a quote by Abigail Adams on its front entrance.

"You can also go down to the Betsy Ross house and hear the great stories of this mother and great entrepreneur of the 18th century," Schneider said. As always, learning is free of charge.

Schneider's final suggestion requires you to take a walk on the wild side.

Moms can enjoy a breakfast buffet in the Philadelphia Zoo's Peacock Pavillion from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., then take a self-guided tour of mom and baby animals. Brunch and zoo admission are $38.95 for adults and just $22.95 for kids.

After spending the day in the "City of Motherly Love," consider surprising Mom with one of the following inexpensive gift ideas:

SWEET AS SUGAR …

Send your Mom a cookie gram from delicious 'Hope's Cookies.' Mother's Day tins start at around $16.

MEMORIES FOR MOM …

Help her preserve special family memories with a digital photo key chain from 'Brookstone.' Built-in memory stores up to 62 color photos, so Mom can take her loved ones everywhere she goes! The keychain sells for $39.95.

A CLASS ACT …

Give Mom a set of her favorite classic movies (digitally remastered on DVD) from Amazon.com.

Happy Mother's Day from CBS3.com!
