Local Teens React To Hannah Montana Controversy
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
She rose to the top on the popular Disney Series 'Hannah Montana,' then successfully launched a sold out tour. Now, Miley Cyrus is attempting to defend the G-rated act that has made her a star.
The controversy comes from a photo by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz during a Vanity Fair photo shoot.
In it, Cyrus appears naked only covered by a thin sheet and posing in a way that some say contradicts her status as a role model.
Ginney McDonald of Alabama said, "I think that she and her family have a responsibility to play that role. If you're going to play that role, you can't play both sides of the fence."
Cyrus has since issued an apology saying she is embarrassed by the photo. Still, the teens we talked to said they were shocked and disappointed.
Alec Hettinger of Danville Middle School said, "It's definitely not what I imagined Miley Cyrus to be doing."
Nikki Cresswell was also surprised by the photo. "I didn't expect her to do anything like that. She doesn't seem to be that kind of girl."
Alynn Myers offered a less than flattering comparison, "I think she's turning into another Britney Spears."
Only time will tell how great an impact the photos will have on Cyrus' career. With a billion dollar empire to her name, some say she will have to get used to the scrutiny that comes with the spotlight.
