From the runway to the red carpet, high fashion starts at the top.
"Well, you have to start with fashion and then fashion dictates the hair," said Giovanni & Pileggi salon owner Giovanni Mele.
But, according to this hair expert, achieving haute couture tresses doesn't mean a trip to the salon. Mele offers tips on three hot hair trends... beginning with mermaid waves.
"It's a beautiful 1940's look. Beautiful waves, very soft waves, very elegant," explained Mele.
And while actresses like Katherine Heigl made waves by donning the style at the Oscars, you can create the look at home.
Just start with 4-inch sections equal from the top. Spray and wrap tightly in curlers, then set under a hair dryer for about ten minutes.
To finish off the look, Mele says you should let the hair cool down and finally
"You get a paddle brush, and you just spray with some hair spray and you just slightly comb the waves or the curls out."
It's smooth sailing for this style, but lots of texture for the next. Here's how Jessica Alba's stylist created the hippie chic milk-maid braid.
"I would suggest you take two sections, right on top of the ears. Then, just make braids," explained Mele.
From there, criss-cross the braids, then secure with pins. Finger-tease for a dramatic effect and don't worry if it's less than perfect.
"I think it should be a little bit messy
"
One style that shouldn't be messy? The off-center chignon. This look starts with teasing, then smooths out as you go. Curl one-inch sections of your pony, then loosely pin to form your bun.
It's very, very elegant. It has been used for Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent
it's very runway."
And who doesn't want hair that looks high fashion?
