HollyEats.com: Five Grease Stains Good?
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
From hoagies and hot dogs to cheese steaks and pork sandwiches, Philly is known for its cheap eats.
But, if you're in the mood to really chow down, Hollister "Holly" Moore is your "go to" guy.
"I've got a sledge hammer pallet, so I want flavors that really pop at me," said Moore.
The former Philly food columnist, now dubbed "the great grease guru," has earned international recognition for his blog
Hollyeats.com. The site rates down-home style cooking on Moore's own five grease stain system.
"If you ravish the food so much, you walk away covered with grease. That's how you know it's good," said Moore.
Now, almost ten years later, Moore's bellied up to the bar at more than one-thousand greasy spoons, seven-hundred of which have earned a spot on his site for three stains or better.
So, what gets a greasy stamp of approval? According to Moore, food comes first. That's followed by atmosphere and the perceived passion shown by the staff.
"Places that have a love for their food and a sense of pride. You know they're working really hard to put out great food," explained Moore.
And most likely working even harder once Moore walks through the door.
