Drew Carey Buys Delco. Man's Twitter Name For $1M
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
When 29-year-old Drew Olanoff was diagnosed with stage 3 hodgkins-lymphoma, he vowed not only to beat it ... but to blame everything and anything on it!
"Cancer deserves it. What better place to put your anger and things that annoy you than on cancer," said Olanoff.
An avid Twitter user, Drew used hashtag #blamedrewscancer to help spread the word ...and the twitterverse quickly took notice.
Soon, users were blaming everything on Drew's cancer
from not having a bone marrow match to their favorite sports team's losing record.
31,000 tweets later, even Lance Armstrong took notice, blaming his broken collar bone on Drew's cancer.
"People were re-tweeting and sharing it and saying
wow, look at this! Lance Armstrong! And it picked up from there," explained OIanoff.
Drew went on to raise $13,000 for Livestrong, then on his ninth trip to chemotherapy, learned he was cancer free.
"The doctor said, in three more treatments, you're done. And I thought, I'm not done. I'm just getting started,'" said Olanoff.
That's when he decided to make the most of his newfound Twitter fame and auction off his @drew handle.
"I said I'll start the bidding at $10,000 and we'll see
maybe Drew Barrymore, Drew Carey. Well, word got back to Drew Carey and he started the bid at $25,000," said Olanoff.
In his very own showcase showdown, the Price Is Right host upped his bid to $100,000 if he could get that many followers on Twitter
"Yeah, if I get a million by the end of the year, by January 1st
I'll give a million dollars to Livestrong," explained Carey in an interview with Shira Lazar of
CBSNews.com.
Drew Olanoff's reaction?
"I said, what? How could it get any bigger, how could it get any better? And he found a way!"
In less than a week, Drew Carey has gone from having 13,000 followers to 58,000, a number Olanoff says will continue to increase.
"I mean, who doesn't want to obliterate cancer? That is my goal, absolutely my goal. I want to get rid of it, I'm tired of it, sick of it. We've lost too many people."
