Teens Go Green
Local Teens Participate In Green Challenge
CHERRY HILL (CBS 3) ―
Kermit the Frog once said, "It isn't easy being green," but these days it certainly seems trendy! From celebrities and politicians to big business and even everyday students, more and more people are doing their part to protect the environment by "going green."
The Cherry Hill Mall's 'Style Squad' is no exception. In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, a group of 35 local students took part in a challenge to see who is "the greenest of them all." To enter the competition, students were required to submit a photo and application that explained their eco-friendly project.
"It could be one thing or one hundred things they do, but we wanted them to show us how they were going green," explained Cherry Hill Marketing Director, Lisa Wolstromer.
Student projects could be as basic as turning off the water while brushing their teeth or as elaborate as Andrea Maeng's of Cherry Hill High School East. The senior "sewing enthusiast" reconstructed and recycled an old prom dress to do her part for the environment.
The winner of the challenge, which will be announced in May, will receive a $100 mall gift certificate and the satisfaction of a job well done.
"It's important for everyone to be more aware of what is happening on the planet. Since there's only one planet earth, everyone has to take steps to take care of it." Wolstromer stated.
That includes the mall itself. Throughout the month of April, shoppers who bring at least 30 shopping bags to the mall's customer service center or the Aveda store and make a $2 donation to 'Clean Ocean Action' will receive a reusable shopping bag. A bag can also be purchased for $5.
From there, the plastic bags will be sold. Proceeds benefit those affected by the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
When asked why the mall chose an eco-friendly initiative, Wolstromer explained 'We think it's always important to be environmentally friendly, it just happens to be an issue that is very timely."
Afterall, going green has never been easier.
