Break It Down: New Breaking Class In Northern Libs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― It's a form of hip hop that will leave you spinning, but for professional breaker Macca Malik, it's about more than smooth moves.

For Malik, break dancing is a dance form, an art form and a life form.

Now, she's sharing her passion for breaking with anyone who's willing to learn through a brand new break dancing class at 954 Dance Movement Collective in Northern Liberties.

In it, she encourages her students to step outside the box.

"Stop worrying about what people think, how people look at you. Just let go," said Malik.

It was an obvious challenge for first-time breaker Anna Sweeny.

"I was very scared and very intimidated, but I worked really hard and good things happened."

From dancing up top to transitioning into the six-step, Macca breaks down each step, encouraging students like Anna to interpret it on their own.

From there, the class forms a circle... connecting the moves they've learned, then learning from each other.

"That's our space where we're all unified, where our energy feeds into, where we show what we can do," said Malik.

"There's a language about it that she's teaching me and a culture I haven't seen before," said first-time breaker Jeremy Stevenson. He signed up for the class out of curiosity and says it's been worth every penny.

"It's helping me learn how to move my body and how to express myself through dance," explained Stevenson.

But, if at first you don't succeed, fellow first-time breaker Anna says, "No problem."

"Everybody is so supportive that it doesn't matter what you're doing. They're going to cheer you on anyway."

Classes cost $15 per session and $12 for students. The last scheduled class is Friday, June 5th. For more information on the class and upcoming sessions, click here.
